Comic strips can be a great way for parents to lightly introduce such heavyweight ideas as double meanings and figurative language, irony, inferential thinking (taking what you know about others and filling in the blanks). These ideas are important to social functioning but are so hard to spotlight and explain during realtime social interaction. The visual element and the storyline of comic strips, graphic novels and animated cartoons can open doors – as long as parents know how to use them with a light touch.
